No Pay: Male Actor - Takedown Towny

Caucasian male, somewhat Good looking, well built, medium height, with a East London accent. This character is the brains of the operation, and is essentially the boss of Handsome Harry who is 'the muscle'.

Take Down Tony and Handsome Harry, two of East London's most notorious petty criminals’ next job is to knock up a dentists office, unfortunately for them, the dentist is more prepared then they had expected.

The film will be shot in the genre of British Crime Comedy, so actors will need to be able to perform an East End Londoners accent(cockney)

The film will be shot on 16mm color negative with sync sound and it is for my NYU film school intermediate production class.

Unfortunately the budget is too small for pay, but Food and Transportation as well as a copy of the film will be provided upon completion.

I will be accepting submissions from all actors UNION OR NON-UNION.

Upon completion this film will be sent to festivals worldwide, and should generate a great amount of exposure for you. All parts listed are main roles.

Caucasian male. Brute but agreeable looking, large in size (5'10'+) and heavyset, East End London accent. Being 'handsome' is an ironic nickname. Harry is not the brightest of the two, but he certainly knows how to use his hands, he is the muscle of the operations, and is Tony's tag-a-long.

Caucasian male, late 40's-early 50's. A somewhat non-descript, medium to slim built man. This character anonymously narrates throughout the film, and has several on-screen lines as well. Dental experience not necessary. This character is a clever man, who ends up turning the tables on the criminals.

The Secretary/Assistant: all ethnicities. A very sexy and attractive girl, slender with a medium to large chest, and a Londoner's accent. She is not your typical secretary. Her attitude will reveal someone who can care less about her job, as well as the customers that come into the dentist office.

No Pay: Male Actor - Jack

Caucasian: JACK is a 25 year old young professional. He is the eldest in his family. He rejects his societal role and is forced to deal with the events leading up until that point in time. He is stoic and reserved. This film is an existential piece dealing with the loss of innocence. It concerns a young professional named Jack and his experience in corporate society which leads him to question where his childhood innocence was replaced with adult expectations.

The shoot dates will be August 16th, 17th, 23rd, and 24th. The bulk of the shooting is exteriors in Brooklyn. Meals will be covered by the production and a copy will be provided upon completion.
No Pay: Female Actress - Dearsay

Desaray is a quirky and ever hopeful artist who lives in a world of her own where Wade, a dog walker is the latest object of her affection. Desaray is not overtly beautiful but her unusual features and odd sense of style beckon attention. She is a bit of a solitary creature whose art provides a personal sanctuary. She's looking for approval in the wrong places. Ultimately, she finds it within herself. Other interests include calligraphy and yo-yoing. She also has a sweet tooth - fireballs are her favorite candy

Desaray is a passionate and off beat artist who is obsessed with Wade, a dog walker in his late thirties whose main objective in life is to have a good time. After weeks of fantasizing about him and their potential love affair, Desaray has the brilliant idea of becoming a professional dog portraitist. However, when she presents the idea to Wade her fantasies end in humiliation and heartbreak. Desperation turns to self-rejuvenation when a close friend advises her to “follow her creative passions” and Desaray takes a job drawing taxidermy birds for Cameron, an ornithologist with an appreciation for art and a sharp wit for life and the unexpected.

Jerry is likable and shy; his brother Mike is a macho family man. When Jerry is accused of sexually abusing his young nephew, the brothers must reconcile their love for each other with the grim circumstances that force them apart.

Audition note: The music is written in the folk/blues style, a contemporary musical theatre song that shows acting range is appropriate.

The Fancy Boy Follies
1st rehearsal TBA. Six performances, September 29 - October 5.

Low-rent, gay “Ziegfeld Follies”, full of outrageously funny, risqué songs and vaudeville-type performance pieces. The material ranges from sweet and smart to very edgy…and all hilarious.

Definitely need guys who will dive in and come ready to play…it’s a ball.

The Men: Four brave, smart, funny, sexy actor/singers who move well (20s to 40s) who have a sense of life experience, each one believable playing everything from high (and low) comic characters to down and dirty strippers. They do not have to be GQ or soap opera handsome…sexy isn’t always just about the looks but each should be in good shape (lean to beefy). They should be willing to show some skin (no frontal nudity) and comfortable doing so (no nudity at auditions). Seeking these four types:

Man 1: Leading man type.

Man 2: Compact, blond All-American.

Man 3: Slightly older “daddy” type.

Man 4: Offbeat and quirky.

One of The Men plays guitar. It would be great if each has some talent or act that can fit into a vaudeville/burlesque setting (juggler, ventriloquist, contortionist, acrobat, imitations, instrumentalist, etc.), but that’s negotiable. Patter-y material is a plus.

Also seeking:

The Follies Man: Sex personified, a “Colt” model with the moves of a Fosse dancer. But he has a soul, spirit and mystique that makes us want to know more about him. Requires a great singer/actor/dancer. Full frontal nudity required in a finale dance number, but for a purpose…really!!! (No nudity at auditions.)

The Road to Ruin

It’s 1928, and Willis Kent’s traveling theatre group is in town for three days only to put on a production of THE ROAD TO RUIN. Willis narrates the story about Sally Canfield, a young girl destined for greatness - to become a baker and veterinarian…until she meets up with Eve, a bad influence who gets Sally chewing gum, smoking and drinking (among other things) with the help of her college friend Buster. Will Sally’s parents put a stop to this before it’s too late? Visit www.theroadtoruin.com for more info.

Faith / Edna: Woman, 30s. Double role. Faith: High school student. Sally’s best friend and bake mate, until she is ousted by Eve. Edna: One of the ladies who lunch, Edna is the most true to her edicts, remains faithful to her principles and is very judgmental of those who don’t. Actress must have a wide range and should be good at transformation, while also having good timing and a wholesome quality. Belt and legit G.

Ms. Dustensnatch / Penelope: Woman, 40s. Double role. Dustensnatch: Dramatic lady of the town. Like Chicken Little, the sky is always falling, and Ms. Dustensnatch is standing right under it. Penelope: Lady who lunches, but also has a secret life as a dominatrix. This secret is very surprising, and one must believe that Penelope is trying to stay the course. Belt, legit B flat.

Eve: Woman, 20s. Her mother is the town madam. Wants to corrupt Sally. Likes a challenge, and isn’t afraid to use any means needed to accomplish her goal.

A saucy, confident girl, brazen and full of moxie, she had a keen ability to size people up and play to their weakness. Needs good comedic timing and a large, belting voice up to an E natural (one legit A flat).

Marian Canfield: Woman, 40 – 50. Sally’s mother. Woman of a certain age who is just starting to lose her luster, and her husband’s eye begins to wander. Compensates by drinking Radithor, a beverage infused with radium. Though she loves her daughter, her current situation takes precedence over her daughter’s needs, and she turns a blind eye to the dangers lurking. Wacky, zany and desperate for affection, Marian ignores the largest of signs that Sally is in trouble. Actress also plays the Nurse, an oversexed assistant to Dr. Henger. Belt.

Buster Custer / Jimmy Goodhue: Man, 20s. Double role. Two characters who are on the extreme opposite ends of the spectrum. Buster: College boy who is under Eve’s spell. Attractive, winning, charming bad boy. Think “the Fonz”, before “the Fonz” existed. Jimmy: Devoutly religious man who wants to do God’s will, provided he gets a cut of the action. Endearing but driven. Must have a solid, sustainable B flat.

To Paint the Earth

All ethnicities welcome.

Chaim Wotosky: Early - mid 20s. Painter who wants nothing more than to be left alone to paint—only even that gets frustrating. Restless, often cynical. Extreme pacifist. Slowly, through Mona, he begins to engage. Strong tenor or versatile baritone.

Mona Betrovicz: Late teens - early 20s. Runner for the Jewish Underground. Brash, boyish, eager, huge-hearted and a bit of a spitfire. Darkens over the course of the show, but never loses a certain inner light. Mezzo soprano - soprano mix/belt - Bb/C break, a little bit legit.

Margalit Betrovicz: Late teens, early 20s. Mona’s quiet sister, more the moon than the sun. Secretive, hardworking, competitive with her older sister even as she idolizes her. Finds her own strength over the course of the show. Mezzo with strong low range.

Anna Betrovicz: Late 30s. Seamstress. Mona and Margalit’s mother. Raised in a Victorian-feeling home, she keeps a tight lock on her family. When the realities of ghetto life set in, this grip begins to loosen. Above all, she insists on continuing to do the daily things. Alto - mezzo soprano. Mostly legit, but can also let it rip.

Israel Crenkov: Early 30s. Former lawyer. Jokester. Father of three-year-old Isaac. Uses play and humor to mask the dangers that lie on the horizon, and in particular to screen them from Isaac. High baritone.

Rachel Crenkov: Early 30s. Israel’s wife. Possessed of a loving heart, but colder on the outside and more wooden than Israel. Develops her own relationship with Isaac as she struggles to keep the family together. Rangy mezzo/soprano versatile.

Maier Burnich: 20s. Leader of Hashomer Hatzair. Advocate of violence from the beginning; hot-headed at times, but a formidable leader. Competes for Mona’s affections. Tenor/baritenor.

Abraham Czernowicz: 50s. Orthodox rabbi and liaison to the Jewish Council. Urges patience and calm within the community, and above all, faith in God. Spiritual leader of the adult community. Bass-baritone/bass.

Euphraim (Sentyk): 20s. Czernowicz’s son. Gradually breaks away from his father over the course of the piece to join the less religious but more militant youth groups. Spiritual leader of the Underground. Tenor.

Jurgen Hening: Late 30s, early 40s. German businessman and opportunist who runs the brush factory in the Ghetto. A mercenary; wartime survivor who looks after himself and those who help him, as long as they’re needed. Bari/bass.

Pay: Female Actress - Kennedy Sommer

African American woman, 27. A vision of raw beauty – sweet and unmanicured. She has not outgrown the habits of a child, such as walking around adults in socked feet and panties – as if conveniently unaware of her sexuality. Intimidated by her mother and emotionally dependent upon her Dad, Kennedy is also two people – a genuine child in a woman's body and, sometimes, an indulgent woman selfishly clutching childhood fantasy. She does not expect people to like her, and therefore keeps the world at bay.

Pay: Female Actress - Sandy Sommer

African American: 50-something. Has impeccable taste and no appetite. Discriminating and a perfectionist, she finds more flaws in the world than in herself, and has no problem speaking her mind. Desirous both of complete control of her household and of a happy life, she is antsy to see Kennedy settled elsewhere in the world, and to have a second chance at a happy marriage. Of all the characters, she is quite arguably the most honest.

Caucasian: Mid - late 20s. Nothing if not charming. Handsome, and a brilliant salesman, he says exactly what a person wants to hear and never asks for a dime. As for his true self, he is a survivor and a pragmatist. He does not define his world by right and wrong, but merely aims to have a good time. Though an excellent judge of character, he is not judgmental. He simply assesses others and adapts accordingly.

Has range and the ability to push the envelope for comedy. Vocally, the role calls for a confident and versatile singer. Has the infectious warmth, humor and ability to balance comedy and drama.

Erin:
Woman, 20s - early 30s. Mezzo soprano to G. Requires a funny, in-charge actress comfortable with the occasional broad choice as well as naturalism; a shape-shifter when it’s called for. Attractive, but needn’t be in a conventional way. Erin and Paul get in conflict together, but there has to be an underlying love there; even if they’re screaming, they’re trying to work it out.

Diane:
Woman, 40s - 50s. Mezzo soprano with belt to G. Needs superb comedy chops, but also carries much of the weightier material in the show. She and Ron are the seasoned old pros of the marriage game; at times they might seem a little over-seasoned. While they’re a little cynical at the beginning, at the end they meet up with the younger couple in terms of acknowledging that while marriage is tough, it’s well worth it. As with all of the characters, she will work in a number of styles from quite broad to naturalistic.

Ron:
Man, 40s – 50s. High baritone to F. Funny that can go dark-funny and then very realistic. Command of style that can turn on a dime. Smart, cynical and sentimental all at once. Ron and Diane have more of the “journey” of the show and must be people that we invest in personally, identify with. Ron is an everyman; a “guy’s guy” is best for this role. Balding is fine, overweight is cool, but it’s really about the character. We have to have empathy for him and identify with him; ideally he should seem or look very normal but be a nut, with a heart.

Singing-Prepare 16 bars of an up-tempo, 16 bars of a ballad and a 1-minute monologue (contemporary/comic preferred). Bring sheet music; accompanist provided. No a cappella or singing to playback.

Not singing-Prepare two contrasting 1-minute monologues.

Bring picture and resume stapled together.

Pay: Theatre in PA 2008-2009 Season (AEA LORT)

We are holding auditions for the last three plays of our 2008-2009 season, which includes:

Schmucks
First rehearsal is November 4, 2008; first preview is December 3, 2008; opening is December 10, 2008; closing is January 4, 2009.

It's 1965, and the great Northeast Blackout covers New York City in a state of panic and disorder. Isolated in a small diner, a young stand-up comic with an upcoming gig on The Ed Sullivan Show encounters comic icons Groucho Marx and Lenny Bruce and implores them for comedic guidance. Actors will need excellent comic timing and two will be portraying famous comics and should thus
be able to convey each particular comics style of delivery and mood.

Joe Klein:
A twenty-eight year old struggling/failing stand-up comic with a deep sentimental streak, self-confidence issues, and very much in need of advice. Desperately wants to succeed as a comic but doesn't really know what to do with his tremendous luck at landing a gig on the Ed Sullivan Show. In many ways a very bland person, but must be bland in an interesting way.

Groucho (Julius) Marx:
The famous comedian is seventy-five years old when we meet him. He is witty, quick, sarcastic, and earnest. Marx uses humor to shield himself from the immense pain he feels at the loss of his beloved brother, Harpo. He also feels as though he pales in comparison to the tremendous talent of his brother. Must have tremendous comedic timing. Actor will need to convey the essence, timing and rhythm and comic delivery of the real Groucho Marx.

Mary Lenahan:
A thirty year old waitress when we meet her. She is cagey and canny and knows a thing or two about the ways of the world. She is more prone to subtle rather than overt opposition and confrontation, especially when confronted with the overwhelming force of Lenny Bruce's action and ego. She's had a hard life and it shows a little more than she'd like it to.

Harpo Marx:
The dead brother of Groucho. He is a kind of ghost or specter that represents the very best of physical, silent, vaudeville comedy more than representing the real life Harpo. He can be of any age but must be an outstanding physical comedian. Needs to be able to ride a unicycle and juggle. Clown and/or mime training a definite plus. The actor must be able to exemplify a representation of the ideal of physical comedy.

Scorched
First rehearsal is January 20, 2009; first preview is February 25, 2009; opening is March 4, 2009; closing is March 29, 2009.

Takes place in various locations in an unnamed North American city and various places in an unnamed civil war-torn Middle Eastern country over the course of fifty years. Actors will be required to play multiple roles. Facility with a near-eastern accent may be required for some characters.

Alphonse Lebel:
A wordy and malapropism spouting notary public who has been engaged as the executor Nawal's will. He talks a great deal, has a clear sense of right and wrong, believes firmly in seeing things to their ends. He is also warm and understanding. Would also play Militia Man and possibly around six other characters sometimes with extremely quick costume/character changes. Character ages range from forties to fifties.

Simon / Wahab:
Simon is a headstrong and angry young man in his mid to early twenties. He's an aspiring professional boxer. The son of Nawal and twin brother of Janine, he holds on to tremendous resentment of his mother which has caused him great pain for much of his life. Wahab is a hopeful young man in his mid to late teens filled with love of the young Nawal and blinded by the realities of the world because of it.

Janine:
Janine is the daughter of Nawal and twin brother of Simon and is in her early to mid twenties. She is a new graduate student working on her Ph.D. in Mathematics focusing on the subject of Graph Theory. She is pensive, quiet, and shy, but can also be obstinate and unyielding when she believes she is right. She is more at comfortable in a solitary environment.

Ralph / Nihad:
Ralph is Simon's personal boxing trainer and a man who wants to help Simon as much as possible by helping Simon help himself. He is in his late twenties or early thirties. Nihad is a psychopathic sniper who is very, very good at killing people. He loves music, frequently sings along to his walkman, and likes to imagine himself being interviewed on American talk shows. A very funny and vicious killer who has no mercy and gets
tremendous enjoyment out of killing. Actor would need facility with a near-eastern accent.

Young Nawal:
The character is between 14 and 19 years old when we see her. Possessed by love and convinced that love can move mountains. She is smart, thoughtful, and poetic. She is headstrong and but when first confronted with opposition she melts and gives in to the will of others. She later grows much more trusting of herself.

Jihane / Middle Aged Nawal:
Jihane is the mother of Nawal and she is in her forties when we see her. She is traditional, conservative, and closed minded. She sees the world for how it is and is perfectly alright with it that way. Nawal in her middle age has learned a great deal about the world. She is highly intelligent, merciful, understanding, but also brutal, stubborn, and self-assured.

Nazira / Older Nawal:
Nazira is Nawal's grandmother. Nazira is in her sixties when we meet her. Aware of the closed-mindedness and ignorance of those around her she prods Young Nawal to learn and grow and leave her town. She is kindly, perceptive, wise and passionate. Older Nawal is seen testifying before a war crimes tribunal about her treatment in prison.

Elhame / Sawda:
Elhame is a midwife who delivers Nawal's child with Wahab. She is kindly and knowledgeable. Sawda is a friend of Nawal who leaves the village with Nawal when they are young. Over the course of the play Sawda ages from twenties to forties.

Antoine Ducharme:
Nawal's male nurse in the hospital. Kind, warm, and friendly. A very sweet man. This actor would play numerous other roles, including a Militia Man and others ranging in age from twenties to fifties.

Hysteria
First rehearsal is April 14, 2009; first preview is May 13, 2009; opening is May 20, 2009; closing is June 14, 2009.

Takes place over the course of one day during the last days of Sigmund Freud's life in Freud's home in exile in London just before World War II. This is a darkly comic farce that requires excellent physical comedy, excellent timing, and dry irony from its actors. Various accents (German/Austrian, British and Spanish) are required for certain roles.

Dr. Sigmund Freud:
The famous doctor in the twilight of his life is in his late seventies or early eighties when we meet him. He is still an energetic old man even though he suffers from pain in his jaw caused by a malignant cancer. Practical, rational, and not easily befuddled. He has a secret which defines his life and which he guards very closely. He would have a slight Austrian accent.

Jessica:
A young woman in her twenties or early thirties. She arrives unexpectedly and is willing to do anything to get and keep Freud's attention. She has a grudge against Freud and demands satisfaction. She doesn't like being touched. An accent (German/Austrian or British) may be required for this character.

Abraham Yahuda:
A large man in his sixties. Yahuda is deeply intelligent. He is Freud's medical doctor and a scholar. He is of an even greater status and weight in the play than Freud himself. A British accent.

Salvador Dali:
The famous surrealistic painter in his thirties. Thin, tall, with a distinctive moustache. He has a thick Spanish accent and queer ideas about the world. Very enthusiastic about Freud and his ideas Dali is a bit of a sponger who feels that he has landed at the feet of a
true master. Very arrogant.
